It's Time to Shape Up, Pup!

Better Than a Pill

Patients stricken with congestive heart failure and confined to a hospital bed are traditionally prescribed several medications to help control the disease. One new treatment has recently made headlines in its ability to decrease high blood pressure, significantly lower blood epinephrine levels (the fight or flight hormone) and lessen anxiety. The only catch is this new "drug" doesn't come in the form of a pill; it is merely a ten-minute petting session with a dog, according to a new study released by the University of California.
Getting a shot at the doctor's office isn't much fun, and it isn't easy to watch your furry family member get one either--especially when it might be in its derri│re. But in a world where even parents of young children are refusing to vaccinate their kids because they feel the risks outweigh the benefits, now some pet owners are posing similar questions to their veterinarian.

Putting bifocals on your elderly beagle is probably just what he needs, but don't count on him not mistaking them for a chew toy. Many dog owners have lovingly looked into the eyes of their aging four-legged companions to notice a slightly hazy, cloudy appearance. Although many owners think it's the start of a cataract, it is usually just a routine change in older dogs called nuclear sclerosis, or hardening of the lens.
