But before heading to the animal shelter or rescue group near you, you need to ask your self first if shih tzu is indeed the right breed for you. Know that:
- A shih tzu is a high maintenance breed that requires more care than some other breeds. Frequent and regular grooming is necessary to avoid tangles and to reduce shedding. If the hair is to be kept at show length, monthly haircut is recommended.
- Shih Tzus are brachycephalic dogs. They are very sensitive to high temperatures thus must be protected from both heat and cold. They should not be left in the car or out during winter. Their flat and small noses also contributes to unclean face when eating.
- Shih Tzus were bred to be companion and house pets. They are unhappy when they are alone for long periods of time. Behavior problems may develop if they are left alone too much.
- They are very sensitive to allergies. Feeding of dog foods with corn can cause itching, hot spots, dandruff, excessive shedding, foot-licking, face-rubbing & staining, loose stools and gassiness.
- Health issues common in this breed are portosystemic liver shunt, renal dysplasia, hip dysplasia and eye problems such as cataracts and clogged tear ducts.
If you are able and willing to take the responsibilities, then nobody can stop you from adopting a shih tzu. However, if you rarely spends time home and too busy to groom a dog, then adopting a dog is not a good option for you. Abandoned dogs need someone to love and care for them, not a person who will abandon them again.
